Crocus are great
heralders of
spring. They come
in cheery colors;
purple, yellow,
white. They
grow from bulbs
and seem pretty
hardy to me. Mine
come back year
after year. The
deer like these so
you may want to
get a spray but
other than that I
haven't noticed
any other menaces
to them. This shot
above was taken a
few days before
the deer gobbled
them all up.
They grow from
small bulbs and
are quick to
plant. The
flowers when they
come up are very
small too. These
above are only a
few inches tall,
maybe three
inches. Put the
bulb with the flat
side down and the
pointy end up
about 3-4 inches
down in the
ground, cover them
back up, give them
a little water and
wait for spring.
The down side
besides deer
eating them is
that they are
short lived. The
blooms last
anywhere from five
days to two weeks.
And don't be
surprised when the
blooms close up at
night and reopen
in the early
morning sun.
