Columbine summer bloomers

grow well in shade or sun

Columbine seem to me to be very easy plants to grow. I don't do anything to them (no fertilizer, no extra care or water- just whatever the weather provides)  They reseed very easily. They come in a good variety of colors. I'm not sure if they are deer resistant but the deer haven't bothered mine yet. Deer will graze in the same garden and eat my roses or tulips but I haven't noticed them going after these.

I can't give any tips on planting these from plants since mine where in the yard when we moved in but I can tell you that I have often spread their seeds and increased my columbine plants many times over.

I've seen them in blue, red, white, pink and shades of these colors.

The downside is that they could be considered invasive if you spread too many seeds. They multiply very easily.

I like to provide a photo of the plants without the flowers as often as I can. Here's what one of the plants looks like in my yard.  I do have wood chips around these but I do that more for aesthetics than for the plant.  This photo was taken in late April.

Deer will eat anything but if there is already plenty for them to eat they will tend to skip these in favor of more tasty items
